Singers: What’s Your Art Style?
Do you pause in confusion when someone asks you what style of music do you sing or perform?
Do you feel lost trying to identify yourself with a certain genre?
Do you ask yourself questions like, what kind of singer am I?
Do I sing pop, jazz, rock, upbeat, soft music, oldies, etc…
If those questions sound familiar, trust me you are not alone.
I’ve personally struggled with those questions for a really long time until I finally found what genre suited me most, and I can assure you, I didn’t get my answers by checking my horoscope luck that day or flipping a coin. It required effort and work, and a lot of trial and error. So why go through all this hassle?
If you are a singer and plan on pursuing a professional career in music, or just maintaining it as a hobby, you must have a signature style. This style will differentiate you from other singers and will allow you to build your act. If I ask you to think of Celine Dion, what is one word you’d describe her with? How about Eminem, Beyonce or even Lady Gaga?
How about you ask yourself what word best describes you as an artist? If you still can’t figure it out, then it’s time for some testing. There are many ways to discover your art style, some of which include listening to artists from different genres, imitating them, practicing over and over, and even working with a vocal coach to guide you to discover which style suits you most.
Most importantly however, remember to stay true to who you are as an individual and as an artist. That will be the best payoff for you!
