3 Tips to Improve Your Singing

We’ve all heard one of those famous phrases: “Breathe from your stomach, It’s okay to look fat”. “Where is your resonance?” “Fix your posture”.

So why the emphasis on all those factors when our voice mainly consists of vocal folds vibrating together to produce sound?

Many people think that singing is an easy activity. However, there is a whole “behind-the-scenes” team of pillars working together to support our singing. Those pillars are the following:

1. Breathing: When you inhale, you must expand your rib cage area to help fill more air in the lungs. To do so, you will need to use your diaphragm and intercostal muscles so that they provide enough breath support for your singing.

2. Posture: For breath support to efficiently work, it must have a smooth passageway, which is correct posture. This is why it is important to align the back, neck, and shoulders. The feet must be well grounded, and shoulders width apart.

3. Resonance & Vibration: Resonance is the pillar that enhances our voice and gives it color and character. It is the amplification of our sound. Vibration on the other hand, is the sensation that sound produces in our body. In other words, it is the sensation that the resonance produces in our body, specifically in our head, face, and chest.

If one of those pillars is missing, a singer could end up hurting their voice. So next time, make sure to pay close attention to your breathing, posture and make sure your voice placement creates proper resonance and vibration.

Still think singing is as easy as it seems?
